How HVAC Companies Get Recommended by ChatGPT
When a homeowner asks ChatGPT for the best HVAC company near them, or asks Perplexity who to call when the AC quits in July, the AI names a few companies. HVAC companies get into that answer with three things, find, trust, and match, applied to heating and cooling. Complete your Google Business Profile with the right categories and service area, stack real Google reviews, and write pages in the words homeowners actually type. Here's each one.
Watch the walkthrough, or read it below. Same answer either way.
1. Make sure the AI can find you
Claim and complete your Google Business Profile, and set the right HVAC service categories and your full service area. Keep your company name, address, and phone identical across every listing and every HVAC and contractor directory. If a homeowner two towns over is in your area, your profile has to say so, or the AI hands them to someone else.
2. Give the AI reasons to trust you
For HVAC, this is mostly reviews. Homeowners lean hard on Google reviews for a contractor they're letting into their house, and so does the AI. Get real reviews after every job. Then get listed in the contractor directories, and keep your BBB and licensing current. Those outside signals are what make the AI comfortable naming you.
3. Match the questions homeowners actually ask
They don't search 'heating ventilation and air conditioning services.' They type 'AC not cooling,' 'furnace won't turn on,' or 'emergency AC repair tonight.' Write a clear page for each real problem you fix, and for each city you cover. Speak the way a homeowner in a hot house speaks.
What a Google AI answer actually does with a 'who should I hire' question
The clearest look anyone has published at this is a study of 1,000 legal-services queries, and the shape holds for any hire-a-pro question. A provider got named in 59 percent of all AI Overview answers and in 92 percent of the commercial ones, and Google ran an average of 6.4 hidden fan-out searches behind each answer before it wrote anything (Herringbone, August 2026). Two things fall out of that for HVAC. The seat exists: on a commercial question the AI almost always names somebody. And you are not being matched against the one question the homeowner typed, you're being matched against six or seven you never see, which is why one catch-all services page loses to a set of specific ones.
Claim Yelp, not just Google
ChatGPT now scores local businesses with an internal rank_score when it picks who to name, and a Yelp profile is one of the named inputs (Daniel Hinckley, August 2026). For a contractor that's a free listing that feeds the model directly. Claim it, keep the name, address, phone, hours, and service area identical to your Google profile, and let the reviews accumulate there too.
The HVAC edge: seasonal spikes
Your busiest search moments are the extremes: the first heat wave, the first hard freeze. That's exactly when emergency queries spike and homeowners ask an AI who to call right now. If you offer 24/7 service or financing, make sure that's on your profile and your pages, it's often what tips the AI's answer your way.
Two things that changed on the paid side
Not AI visibility, but they land on the same homeowner. Google Local Services Ads now take a booking directly, without linking a separate booking partner (Google Ads, August 2026), so the path from an ad to a scheduled call got shorter. And Apple launched ads in Apple Maps, but home-services businesses are barred from buying them (MediaPost, August 2026), so if somebody pitches you Apple Maps placement for an HVAC company, that's not a thing you can buy today.

- What matters most for HVAC AI visibility?
- Reviews and a complete Google Business Profile. Homeowners and AI both lean hard on reviews for a contractor.
- What should my HVAC pages target?
- The problems homeowners type: 'AC not cooling,' 'furnace won't turn on,' 'emergency AC repair,' one clear page each, per city.
- When do HVAC AI searches spike?
- The first heat wave and the first hard freeze, emergency queries jump. Make sure 24/7 and financing are listed.
- How many searches does Google run behind one AI answer?
- More than one. In a 1,000-query study of a services category, Google averaged 6.4 hidden fan-out searches per AI Overview and named a provider in 92 percent of the commercial answers (Herringbone, August 2026). You're being matched against questions the homeowner never typed.
- Can an HVAC company buy Apple Maps ads?
- No. Apple launched Maps ads in August 2026 but home-services businesses are excluded (MediaPost, August 2026). Google Local Services Ads, on the other hand, now take a booking directly without a separate booking partner (Google Ads, August 2026).
