How to Get Customers From AI Search
To get customers from AI search, not just show up in it, two things have to be true. You have to get named when a buyer asks an AI for a business like yours, and once you're named, it has to be easy to act. Most advice only covers the first half. Getting named takes find, trust, and match. Making it easy to act takes complete, current details, because when an AI recommends you it pulls your hours, phone, and booking link straight into the answer. People call this work AI search SEO, AI search marketing, or AI visibility. The label doesn't matter. The two halves below do.
Watch the walkthrough, or read it below. Same answer either way.
Half one: get named
When someone asks ChatGPT or Perplexity for the best business in your category near them, the AI names a few. To be one of them, three things have to line up: the AI has to find you (complete Google Business Profile, clear website), trust you (reviews, listings, mentions on pages you don't own), and match you to the question (plain buyer language, not jargon). Find, trust, match. That gets you named.
Half two: make it easy to act
This is the part people miss. When an AI recommends you, it often pulls your details straight into the answer, your hours, your phone number, your booking link, what you do. If that information is incomplete, wrong, or out of date, the AI still hands the buyer a dead end, and you lose the lead you just earned. Make sure everything the AI can pull is complete and current: correct hours, a working phone number, a booking link if you take appointments, and a clear line on exactly what you do.
Half three: keep it current
Getting named once is not the finish line. Content the engines cite runs 25.7 percent fresher than content that ranks in regular search, and a citation holds for a median of about 4.5 weeks before something newer takes the slot (NoGood, September 2026). So put a real reason on the calendar to touch the pages every month: current prices, current hours, a new question answered, this season's work. Not a date stamp on an unchanged page.
Where the citations actually come from now
Two things moved in August, and both change where you spend your time. Reddit used to be one of ChatGPT's biggest sources; after August 8 its share of ChatGPT citations fell to roughly 0.5 percent (Semrush, August 2026). It still matters to the buyer, about half of shoppers say they check Reddit to verify a recommendation before acting (Reddit, August 2026), it just stopped being what the engine quotes. YouTube went the other direction: it pulls roughly 200 times more AI citations than any other platform, and it is long-form video doing that, not Shorts (NoGood, September 2026). If you are only going to make one thing, make the long one.
Why this matters right now
AI search is early. Most of your competitors aren't paying attention to it yet. The businesses that get named and make it easy to act are building a lead source their competitors don't have. That advantage is biggest before everyone else catches on.

- How is getting customers from AI different from showing up?
- Showing up gets you named. Getting customers also needs the details the AI pulls (hours, phone, booking link) to be complete and current, or the lead dead-ends.
- What does the AI pull into its answer?
- Often your hours, phone number, booking link, and a line on what you do. Keep all of it correct.
- Is it too early to bother with AI search?
- No, early is the advantage. Most competitors aren't paying attention yet.
- Is this the same as AI search SEO or AI local SEO?
- Same work, different labels. AI search SEO, AI search marketing, AEO, GEO, and AI visibility all mean getting your business named in AI answers. For a local business the local half does the heavy lifting, your Google Business Profile, reviews, and service-area pages, which is where the term AI local SEO comes from.
- Is video worth it for AI search?
- Long-form video is. YouTube pulls roughly 200 times more AI citations than any other platform, and it's the long videos doing it, not Shorts (NoGood, September 2026). One real walkthrough of the work you do beats a stack of clips.
- Does Reddit still matter?
- To the buyer, yes. To ChatGPT, much less than it did. Reddit's share of ChatGPT citations fell to about 0.5 percent after August 8 (Semrush, August 2026), while roughly half of shoppers still check Reddit before acting on a recommendation (Reddit, August 2026). Treat it as a place buyers verify you, not a place the engine quotes you.
