What Is AEO? Answer Engine Optimization, Explained
AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization. It's the practice of getting your business named inside the answers AI engines give, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google's AI, when someone asks them for a business to hire. Think of it like SEO, but instead of ranking on a list of blue links, you're trying to be the business the AI actually names in its answer. AEO, GEO, and 'AI visibility' all point at the same goal, and here's what it means for you.
Watch the walkthrough, or read it below. Same answer either way.
Why AEO is suddenly a thing
For twenty years, getting found meant ranking on Google. Now a growing share of people skip the list of links entirely. They ask ChatGPT or Perplexity who's the best in your category near them, and they go with the names they get back. If your business isn't in that answer, you're invisible to those buyers, and you never even see the lead. AEO is how you get into it.
AEO, GEO, AI visibility: same goal
You'll hear a few names for this and they mean basically the same thing. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization). GEO (Generative Engine Optimization). Some people just say AI visibility. Don't get hung up on the label. They all point at one goal: being the business the AI recommends.
How AEO differs from SEO
SEO gets you onto Google's page of links, where you compete for a click. AEO gets you named inside the AI's answer, where there is no list, just a short recommendation. The signals overlap, a strong website and a good Google profile help both, but they are not the same game. A business can rank fine on Google and still be completely absent from ChatGPT.
What actually moves it: find, trust, match
An AI recommends a business it can find, trust, and match to the question. It has to be able to find you, from a complete Google Business Profile and a clear website. It has to have a reason to trust you, from reviews and mentions on other sites. And it has to match you to what the buyer actually asked, which means writing in the plain words your buyers use. That's the whole game.
Where AEO actually happens
It is not one place. A buyer might ask ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, or Copilot, and Google now answers a lot of searches itself with an AI Overview and a local pack before you ever reach a blue link. Each one builds its picture from a different mix of sources, so you can be named on one and invisible on another. That is why a real read asks every engine the same buyer questions instead of checking one and assuming the rest match.
How you know it's working
This is where most of the AEO business falls down. A dashboard score that goes from 42 to 61 tells you nothing, because you cannot check it. The only proof that counts is the answer itself: ask the engine the question your buyer would ask, capture what it says and the sources it cites, then ask again later and see whether your name showed up. Screenshots you can re-run yourself, with the exact question and the date. If a provider cannot show you that, they are selling you a number they made up.
Do you need a tool for this?
There are trackers now that will monitor your AI mentions for a monthly fee, and if all you want is a readout, one of them is a fine buy. Just be clear on what you are getting. The tools tell you you're invisible. They do not fix the reason. The work that changes the answer is your Google Business Profile, real reviews, the sources the engines quote, and pages written in the words your buyers actually use. That part is work, not a subscription.
What doesn't count as AEO
No matter who tells you otherwise: keyword stuffing, buying cheap backlinks, and dropping an llms.txt file on your site do not move AI recommendations. The engines read the same real signals a smart customer would, do you exist, do people vouch for you, do you fit the need.

- What is AEO?
- AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is getting your business named inside AI answers, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google's AI, when buyers ask for a provider.
- Is AEO the same as GEO?
- Essentially yes. AEO, GEO (Generative Engine Optimization), and 'AI visibility' are different names for the same goal: being the business the AI recommends.
- How is AEO different from SEO?
- SEO gets you onto Google's list of links. AEO gets you named inside the AI's answer, where there is no list. The signals overlap but it's not the same game.
- Does an llms.txt file help AEO?
- No. It does not move AI recommendations. Real signals do: findability, reviews and citations, and buyer-language pages.
- Which AI engines does AEO cover?
- The ones buyers actually ask: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, and Google's own AI Overviews and local pack. Each builds its picture from a different mix of sources, so you can be named on one and missing on another.
- Do I need a tool or platform to do AEO?
- No. A tracker can tell you where you stand, and that is worth something. But it does not change the answer. What changes the answer is your Google Business Profile, real reviews, the sources the engines quote, and pages written in your buyers' words.
- How do I know if AEO is working?
- Ask the engines the question your buyer would ask, capture the answer and the sources it cites, then ask again later. If your name shows up where it didn't before, it worked. Insist on screenshots you can re-run yourself, not a dashboard score.
- How much does AEO cost?
- At AutoJate the read is free. If you want the gaps fixed, the build starts at $2,500 plus a $350/month action retainer that keeps your pages, citations, and reviews fresh. Those are floors, settled after the read.
