How to choose an AI visibility provider
A year ago almost nobody sold "AI visibility." Now everybody does, from a $30 tool you run yourself, to a local agency that folds it into everything else, to a platform that costs thousands a month, to a person who does it for you. They are not the same thing, and the wrong one is money you won't get back.
Here's how to tell them apart, and the questions that sort the straight shooters from the snake oil.
First, know the four kinds
Almost everything sold as "AI visibility" falls into one of four buckets. Figure out which one you need before you look at a single price.
Software that tracks where you show up across the AI engines and hands you a list of things to fix. Profound, Otterly.ai, AthenaHQ, Goodie, Scrunch, and a growing list of others. They're good at telling you where you stand. The fixing is on you, or on someone on your team. Best if you have an in-house marketer who'll act on the report.
Bigger platforms and GEO agencies built for funded software companies and national brands with a team and a real budget. Deep features, deep price. If you're a venture-backed SaaS, this is your lane. If you run a local shop with a few employees, it's overkill you'll pay for and barely use.
A local shop that bundles traditional SEO (keyword content, blog posts, backlinks) with the newer AI and local work, all in one cheap monthly retainer. Attractive because it's one vendor for everything and the sticker is low. The trade is breadth over depth: a little of everything, and the AI-visibility piece is one line item competing with ten others for the hours. Good if you want broad coverage and price is the deciding factor. Worth asking what actually moves the needle for your business, and whether it's getting real attention or just a box on a list.
Someone runs the read, builds the signals, and holds it month to month, so you don't learn a tool or hire a marketer, and does that one thing deep instead of bundling it into a pile of services. Fewer people work this lane for local and service businesses, because it's hands-on and narrow, not software or a full-service retainer. This is where AutoJate sits.
The questions to ask any of them
Tool or service, cheap or pricey, run every provider through these five. The answers tell you fast who's honest.
The honest ones show you the real AI answers in screenshots, before and after, that you can re-run yourself. A made-up dashboard score you can't check is a sales pitch, not proof.
A tool that scores you is not the same as someone who fixes it. Be clear which one you're buying, and which one you actually need.
Most of these tools were built for software companies, where the signals live on Reddit, G2, and developer forums. A local or service business gets named off different things: your Google profile, real reviews, local citations. A tool tuned for SaaS won't move that.
If anyone guarantees you a specific spot in an AI's answer, walk away. The engines decide and they change often. Nobody controls that, and pretending otherwise is the clearest snake-oil tell there is.
Planted reviews and fake mentions backfire, the engines are built to spot and discount them. Real customers, real reviews, real mentions. If a pitch leans on volume of fake-looking signal, it's a risk to your name, not a fix.
Where AutoJate fits (and where it doesn't)
I'm the done-for-you option for a local or service business. I run the read, build the signals, and hold it month to month, so you don't learn a tool or hire a marketer. I show you the real AI answers in screenshots, before and after, so you can see what actually moved.
I'll also tell you when I'm not the right call. If you're a funded software company with an in-house marketing team, a tool like Profound or AthenaHQ will probably serve you better than I will, and I'd rather say that than sell you something that doesn't fit. If you run a local business and want it handled by one person who shows you the proof, that's me.
The build starts at $2,500, plus a $350 a month action retainer. Those are floors. We settle the real number after the read.

- What's the difference between a tool and a service?
- A tool tracks where you stand in AI answers and tells you what to fix. A service does the fixing. Tools are cheaper and good if you have someone in-house to act on them. A done-for-you service costs more because a person does the work. Pick based on whether you have the time and the team, not just the price.
- Should a local business use Profound, Otterly, or AthenaHQ?
- Those are solid monitoring tools, mostly built for software companies and marketing teams. If you have an in-house marketer who'll act on the report, they can be worth it. If you run a local or service business and want it handled, a tool just hands you homework. That's the gap AutoJate fills, and if a tool genuinely fits you better, I'll say so.
- What about a local agency that does SEO and AI together for a low monthly fee?
- Those exist and some are good. The pitch is everything in one cheap retainer. The thing to check is depth. Bundling SEO, content, backlinks, local, and AI into one low monthly means the AI-visibility work is one line among many, and traditional SEO signals like backlinks and blog volume, on their own, usually aren't what get a local business named in an AI answer. Your Google profile, real reviews, and the specific sources the engines quote matter more. Ask any of them to show you the real AI answers moving, not a dashboard score. If you want broad and cheap, an all-in-one shop fits. If you want the AI-visibility piece done deep and proven, that's a different buy.
- Can anyone guarantee my business gets recommended by AI?
- No, and anybody who guarantees a specific ranking is lying to you. The engines decide and they change how they work whenever they want. What a straight provider guarantees is the work and the proof: where you stand today, the work to move it, and a re-check so you can see what actually changed.
- How do I start without committing?
- Get a free read of where you stand first. You should be able to see the real AI answers for your business and your competitors before you pay anyone anything. If a provider won't show you that up front, that tells you something.
